Checking in...
7 Jan 2019 19:51First full week back at work and I'm already several days behind. Two new contractors checking in today, one of which is a Systems Architect, so I'm already hearing about how our existing code is inefficient and buggy. Yeah, I knew that. We're coping and have been coping and that is your job to make it better, but ideally without starting 10 minutes after arrival. Give me a day or two, at least, to get used to you.
The other guy just sat quietly and finished the first project I gave him. Granted, it was very, very, very easy, but come on! Take more than an hour, please.
On top of that, the contractor I have to micro-manage turned in his latest project and I have to do a code review (and test it like a user would (which means not following directions)) because I can pretty much guarantee he didn't code for that scenario. That's kinda the point, right? I think thinking like a user when coding is a good thing. Throwing an error that says "Data entered is incorrect" for the output of a job where 10k lines of data were entered isn't helpful. It isn't helpful if 10 lines were entered, but I can't seem to make that clear to him.
At any rate, I now have a total of 5 developers and 1 Architect under me and at some point, the Architect is going to become my boss, so that's a little weird. I knew this when we hired him, but I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Three of them are extremely self-sufficient (thank god!), so that just leaves micro-manage guy and newbies. And now my (real) boss has pulled me in to be the Tech Lead on our migration to an entirely new system, with his boss as the lead. Which means my boss' boss is now sending me emails and asking for information and that's not a request you can really blow off for later. I honestly don't know how some people do this. I don't even really like managing others (except when I kinda sorta do).
I already don't have free time to do what I want to do (read, catch up on movies) or even what I need to do (replace the O2 sensor in my car, hang my new window shades (after buying them first)) because I get home and all I want to do is crawl into bed and go to sleep. The only reason I've manage to get this much typing in is because a friend caught me online and started messaging me about a fic she's reading (which I need to re-read. Again.).
My New Year's Resolution was to spend more time on myself. I've already blown it and we're a week into 2019. Go, me!
